Activation of JAK/STAT Signaling Pathway in Drosophila melanogaster S2 Cell Culture

The JAK/STAT signaling pathway plays a critical role in different processes of ontogenesis in higher eukaryotes. The fruit fly drosophila is a convenient model used to study this pathway, since, in this system, its major components are represented by unique factors. This work describes the use of Drosophila melanogaster S2 cells to study the activation of JAK/STAT target genes. It was shown that S2 cells contain large quantities of STAT protein, which migrates into the nucleus in response to the treatment of the cell with pervanadate. In response to pervanadate, STAT, along with other transcription factors, is recruited onto the regulatory sequences of target genes and activates their transcription.
